Migrants are encouraged to set up business in New Zealand through two policy initiatives announced today.
The Minister of Immigration, Hon Tuariki Delamere, said foreign nationals who have established successful businesses in New Zealand can qualify for residence under the new Entrepreneur category while people interested in setting up a business here will be able to apply for a long-term multiple re-entry visa to get their business underway. " There is a wealth of potential migrants with entrepreneurial talent who would like to make New Zealand their business destination, but have been unable to meet the points requirements under the General Skills and Investor categories. This is particularly the case in the IT, tourism and hospitality industries. " This new category recognises that entrepreneurs do not necessarily have the tertiary qualifications recognised under General Skills category or the significant investment funds required under the Investor category. But they do have energy and flair and a willingness to be active in the business community in New Zealand," Mr Delamere said. The pathway to becoming a resident under the new Entrepreneur category is the long-term business visa, also announced today. "With the long-term business visa, people who have a robust business proposal will be granted a multiple re-entry visa, initially for three years and renewable after that, to allow them to come to New Zealand an set up business here. Once that business is established successfully they can qualify for residence under the Entrepreneur category," he said. Applicants for the long-term business visa must have a specific business proposal, relevant skills and work experience and sufficient capital to finance the proposal. They must also have additional funds for heir personal use while in New Zealand. The Entrepreneur category and long-term business visa will take effect from 29 March 1999.
