Hon Murray McCully NEW ZEALANDERS "TOO SLOW" RECOGNISING MILLENNIUM OPPORTUNITIES |
New Zealanders were "in danger of being too slow to recognise the opportunities in the Millennium programme of events", according to Tourism Minister, Murray McCully.
The Minister described the next 18 months as "the most high profile opportunity New Zealand will have on the international stage for many decades". "In terms of visiting media and international television reach for New Zealand, the list is far more impressive than most people understand." The Minister listed:
- The America's Cup, providing television coverage over seven months to an estimated 500 million viewers. - The World Cup of Golf, which will provide coverage on 180 million television screens in 130 countries. Mr McCully says the Millennium celebrations themselves provide an opportunity for Zealand as the first nation to see the dawn of the next century to "get itself on screens all over the world". He said "detailed work" was being done which would be unveiled "quite soon".
