SHOT IN THE ARM FOR NORTH AMERICAN CAMPAIGN

An extra $550,000 will be put into efforts to promote New Zealand exports and tourism products in North America as a result of the Government's Policies for Progress programme, Trade Minister Lockwood Smith announced today.

"The USA is a vital and attractive market for our consumer goods and tourism industry and now is the right time to be giving an extra push to our efforts there", Dr Smith said.

The extra $550,000 will be put into the front end of a sophisticated direct mail and a web site campaign, currently being developed by Trade New Zealand in conjunction with the Tourism Board and a range of exporters.

The campaign targets the food service sector and consumers, and will showcase New Zealand food, beverages and tourism. Food professionals will be encouraged to utilise New Zealand products while consumers will be given advice on where to try them, both in North America and in New Zealand.

"The additional funding will enable Trade New Zealand double the number of food professionals contacted and to launch the consumer web site early, as well as extending the target market to an additional half million consumers."

The campaign is being managed by Trade New Zealand's Los Angeles office under the umbrella of the New Zealand Way fern brand. It is utilising leading American chef Jeffrey Mora, who has created special recipes for New Zealand ingredients and is advising on promotions to the food service sector.
