TRADE LIBERALISATION WORK GETS $450,000 BOOST

New Zealand's efforts to liberalise key export markets are to get a $450,000 boost under the Government's Policies for Progress programme, Trade Minister Lockwood Smith announced today.

"On a level global playing field, New Zealand exporters can compete and win against the best in the world," Dr Smith said. "Building on our efforts to level the global playing field is one of the best ways we can help our exporters in today's difficult global trading environment."

The $450,000 will be used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to:

  • finance visits by quarantine officials to high priority markets like China and South America
  • expand trade policy research into issues like the proposed APEC Food System.
  • trade scholarships and technology transfer to Least Developed Countries seeking to develop trade rules complying with WTO obligations.

"All these are important issues which the new funding will ensure get even greater attention," Dr Smith said.
