MAJOR PUSH FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS

New Zealand's efforts to attract more overseas students to schools, tertiary institutions and private training establishments have been given a $400,000 boost under the Government's Polices for Progress programme, Trade Minister Lockwood Smith announced today.

"Overseas students provide significant foreign exchanges earnings and also add valuable diversity to our education institutions," Dr Smith said.

"We want more to come to study here.

"Many of our educational institutions are wanting to target non-traditional markets such as South America, while the Government has recently announced the quadrupling of the quota for students from China.

"These two markets are therefore key priorities for Trade New Zealand which now has responsibility for promoting New Zealand as a destination for overseas students."

The $400,000 will be allocated to develop generic promotional material in Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin and for extra staffing at Trade NZ's offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangxhou.
