Biography
Elected as an Alliance list MP in 1996, she is now the Minister of Women's Affairs, Youth Affairs, Statistics and the Associate Minister of Labour and Commerce.
Laila was a lawyer in the trade union movement before entering parliament.
She is a founding member of the Alliance, having resigned from the Labour Party in 1989 in protest at the social and economic policies of the last Labour Government. At that time she was also required to leave her employment as an advisor to the Minister of Disarmament. Her interest in disarmament issues began as a teenager involved in the anti-nuclear movement and included a year at the UN in Geneva and New York with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom UN office.
Laila was educated at Auckland Girls Grammar Scool and Auckland University - where she won senior prizes in both politcal studies and law. She has a BA/LLB.
Laila is married to Barry Gribben, a health policy expert with a particular focus on primary health care services. They have two children - Sam and Jack.
